The first step if you are willing to conceive is to learn when you are ovulating. Ovulation is one part of the female menstrual cycle where part of the ovary discharges an oocyte. This female gamete goes down the fallopian tube where it may be fertilized by a sperm.

Females ovulate 14 days before the first day of their period if you have a regular menstruation you can work out when this is likely to happen.

Ovulation is controlled by part of the brain called the hypothalamus, which sends signals that instruct the anterior lobe and pituitary gland to secrete luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).

Hormones fluctuate throughout the cycle, resulting in a sharp rise in FSH, Luteinizing Hormone followed triggering ovulation, ovulation then remains more high luteinizing hormone the progesterone.

The process itself can be informally divided into 3 phases:

  1. The follicular phase: A layer of cells around the ovum becomes more mucous-like and expand, and the uterus lining begins to thicken, this is called the periovulatory.
  2. The ovulation phase: When the enzymes are secreted and form a stigma that the ovum and its network of cells use to exit the follicle and eventually enter the fallopian tube. This is the period of fertility and usually lasts from 24 to 48 hours, this is called the ovulatory.
  3. The luteal phase: A hormone called LH or luteinizing hormone is secreted. A fertilized egg will be implanted into the womb, while an unfertilized egg slowly stops producing hormones. In addition, the lining of the uterus begins to break down and prepares to exit the body during menses.

Remember that the process usually occurs between the 10th and the 19th day of the menstrual cycle, more often around the 14th and the 15th day and this is the time where humans are most fertile.

Some woman when they are ovulating notice a pain on their tummy, the majority will also feel a change in their vaginal discharge. Your vaginal mucus will change it´s consistency for a day , it will before thinner and slippery . To check when the egg is ready to ovulate you can buy an ovulation test kit that will detect the rise in the level of your LH which surges up just as you are ovulating.
