IVF with egg and sperm donation in Spain

In vitro fertilization (IVF) with egg donation and sperm donation from the semen bank is a technique in which donated oocytes are fertilized by sperm of an anonymous donor in the laboratory.

Donors are selected based on extremely strict medical criteria test, according to physical and immunological characteristics of donor and the receiver. Spanish legislation requires that egg donation is anonymous, where donor and receiver will not meet each other. Donors have to undergo a treatment for about two weeks to stimulate their ovaries, administering hormones similar to those produced by the woman herself (gonadotropins). This stimulation is regularly monitored by analyticals and ultrasound scans. After several follicles have reached the right size, final oocyte maturation is induced and eggs are removed by follicular puncture.

The semen sample is obtained from an anonymous donor who has undergone a full medical check to ensure the quality of their sperm and rule out any kind of abnormality. Spanish legislation guarantees their anonymity.

Once the eggs have been removed, they are placed in a culture dish while donor sperm sample is being prepared by andrology laboratory. Insemination of oocytes is performed by ICSI (microinjection of a sperm into each mature egg), a procedure where a sperm is injected directly into each egg.

The day after ICSI procedure we will know how many eggs have been fertilised. These fertilised eggs are observed until they are ready to be transferred to the uterus. On transfer day, embryos showing the best signs of developing are selected and inserted deep inside the uterus.

IVF with egg donation and sperm donation is recommended for women who have problems with their ovaries (they are not producing eggs or the eggs are not of sufficient quality) .  IVF with egg and sperm doantion is also used if there is a genetic disease o condition that makes ovarian stimulation impossible. It is also recommended for single mother over 40 years.
