The surgery

The obesity unit will study if the patient is an ideal candidate for the intragastric balloon. Once it is decided that this is the ideal and most efective obesity treatment for the patient, a medical checkup is carried out.

The intragastric balloon is a small expandible silicone sphere that is introduced in to the stomach through endoscopy, under sedation. Once in place, it is filled with saline to occupy volume inside. It only takes 20 minutes to place the gastic balloon in the stomach.

The intragastric balloon stays placed in the stomach for a 6 months. During this time the patient can carry out a completely normal lifestyle, but will have a reduced appetite and by eating a small amoun of food, will feel satisfied. Eating less amount of food and following a supervised diet set by a nutritionist, the extra kilos are lost.
